In Michael’s words:
I was bitten by the shutterbug as a boy. An enjoyable pursuit that became a way of life: taking and making photographs for fun. What is interesting? What compels me to look closely? What is the character of a place or the story in a face? What is the personality of light? What defines a picture? Nothing should be ignored. Be provoked and inspired by the visible. Question expectations and practice swift decisions. Look for springs of beauty, humor, and surprising meaning in daily life. This becomes a way of being in the world, as natural as thinking.
Choosing a digital “point & shoot” camera for its portability, unobtrusive size, and automatic functions, I accept the intrinsic limitations of its optics while embracing its potential for spontaneity and energetic engagement with the world.
Another boyhood obsession was the movies. I grew up immersed in that culture. Now, I am employed in the motion picture industry as an electrician and gaffer, lighting movies for a living. The light that is a narrative tool on the screen also transforms the spaces where the movies are manufactured. These are spaces of complex machinery, unique perspectives, surprising juxtapositions of real and unreal, strangeness, and beauty. The practice of picture taking/making is the same wherever I am, but my many hours on location and in studios have provided a vantage to a world vibrating with visual potential.
The resulting images are a biopic of my working life in a factory of dreams.
Bio
Michael Hunold of Woodstock has been a photographer, sometimes professionally, since his teens. He was a staff photographer with the Soho Weekly News; Center for Inter-American Relations; Museum of Natural History. He was stringer for Time-Life. His photographs have appeared in: The Village Voice; New York Magazine; The New York Times; The Woodstock Times; The Kingston Freeman.
Hunold’s photographs have been exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Goddard-Riverside Community Center; Davis Orton Gallery; and the Griffin Museum Of Photography. His photobook, SHOOT, was judged “Best-In-Show” in Davis Orton Gallery’s Photobook Exhibition, 2014 juried by Paula Tognarelli and Karen Davis.
Hunold has an MFA from NYU Graduate Film School. He is a member of IATSE Local 52 and the Screen Actors Guild.
